  • Sports: Wisdom Lane Wrestling Achieve Undefeated Season

The Wisdom Lane Wildcat wrestling team achieved something that has never been achieved in Wisdom's history, an undefeated season. The grapplers fought to a 9-0 season defeating some of the top wrestling programs in Nassau County. The season was led by a dominating eighth grade class, many of whom enjoyed an extremely successful individual season, to complement the team's success. The eighth graders' success started in the 86-pound weight class where Brendan Sweeney led the charge for an impressive season, for his first year on A-Mat. Michael Carella followed at 92 pounds and always guaranteed an impressive match. Johnny Pellegrino, a surprise star of the wrestling team wrestled most of the season at 110, although he was bumping up a weight class because he weighed only 104 pounds. The 116 pound weight class showcased Mike Roestenberg he also campaigned for a very successful season. The next five weight classes could be considered a modern day murderer's row. If the matches were close at the beginning of the 122-pound weight class, it didn't remain so for long. Eric Brouillet and Sean O'Malley both weighed in at 122; although, the two of them flip-flopped for 122 and 128. Eric and Sean both had undefeated seasons until the final match of the season. The 128-pound weight class was usually housed by Captain Sean Anglim, but due to injury he was only able to wrestle two matches. At 134 pounds, Rob McNamara led the way to a very impressive season with only one loss in dual meets. The Wildcats were blessed with a 140-pound wrestler who not only went undefeated for the season, but became a middle school state champion. Joe Kavanagh dominated every match this season, winning each match by pin. In the state tournament, Joe also pinned every opponent. His state victory also gave him an opportunity to participate in that national wrestling tournament. In this tournament, he received All-American status by placing sixth. The A-Mat eighth graders were capped off by a duo who shared the 148-pound weight class, Mike McMahon and Juan Diaz. Both of whom had outstanding seasons for the A-Mat. The undefeated season did not come easy by any stretch of the imagination. Wisdom's last two opponents were also undefeated, Berner Middle School and Seaford Middle School. Both matches were a nail biter, but Wisdom had prevailed thanks to the successful eighth graders competing. The A-Mat also held some very impressive seventh graders, who look forward to lead the team next year. Joey Cracchiolo started the A-mat matches off at the 80 pound weight class. Another seventh grader who wrestled with poise of a veteran was Jon Maldonado, by the end of the season he wrestled a controlled smooth match that always ended with a victory. Another shining star of the seventh grade class who wrestled on the A-Mat was Ryan Coleman, who wrestled at 104 pounds. The Wisdom Lane Wildcats successful season would not have been complete if it wasn't for the eighth graders on the team who were models of hard work and dedication on the B-Mat: Randy Giavanello, Ryan Bellucci, Anthony Perullo, Richie Nielson, Vinny Scaduto who led the 104 pound weight class on the A mat before injury ended his season, Vitaliy Triglia, Jordan Rose, John Patti, Mike Longo, Dennis Rothar, Tony Artoglou, John Shanley, Tom Nuckel whose season was also ended early due to injury, Mike Acquaotta, Jon Taggart, Matt Pretter, Matt Santorufo, Tyler Hasset, Joe Smithwick, Mohammed Mallick, and Mike Roman. The Wildcats look forward to another very successful year in the future. Laura D'Aquila, Laruen Montvillo, Emily Smucker, Crisi Romero, Brittany Stallone, Jen Gollino, Brianne Spitaliere, and Joey Hwang, the team's manager helped keep the team organized and on track.
