With his family donning small photos with yellow ribbons attached, Spc. Daniel Fuentes of Levittown was laid to rest on April 16 at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.
At the Charles J. O'Shea Funeral Home in Wantagh over 100 mourners came to pay their respects. Before the funeral, an Army official presented the Fuentes family with five medals, including the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart and War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Fuentes, 19, of Levittown, died on April 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, deployed out of Fort Riley, KS. This was Fuentes' first deployment in Iraq. He was a 2005 graduate of Island Trees High School.
Local elected officials were in attendance, as well as school officials, community veteran organizations and fire departments. Levittown Fire Department Engine 3, carried flowers beneath the Arch of Honor, which was provided by the Wantagh Fire Department's Ladders 1 and 2.
In addition to his parents Nancy and Armando Fuentes, he is survived by siblings, Julio, 17 and Tatyana, 7, as well as his fiancée, Emma McGarry, who is pregnant with their child.
