A letter appearing in the March 2 Levittown Tribune (Massive Removal of Tree Habitat Along Wantagh Parkway) discussed a serious quality of life issue for Levittown residents, particularly those living along Loring Road. Specifically, Neptune Regional Transmission System and the Long Island Power Authority have not "treaded lightly on nature" in the handling of tree removal along the Wantagh Parkway. The trees have been cut down to make way for a new power cable in our region. Work crews have changed landscape elevations, causing water to pond in large depressions.
Like the author of the above-captioned letter, I am outraged at this assault on our precious resources. In fact, I have become actively involved in this issue, although the project is on state property, and is entirely outside my jurisdiction as a Hempstead Town Councilman. I have demanded that the damaged and slashed trees be restored.
Starting in January of last year, I began writing officials at the New York State Department of Parks and Recreation, the state's Department of Transportation, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and other officials. I have received written and verbal assurances that the damaged and destroyed trees will be replaced and the water ponding will be remedied. The work, which is scheduled to commence this spring, will be carefully monitored by me.
The preservation of our natural resources is an important matter. If residents see any destruction of our area landscape, they can call my office at 812-3200, and my staff will investigate.
