The girls' varsity basketball team won their second straight Conference Championship by defeating Roslyn 49-41. The game was close throughout, and with the score tied at 41 with two minutes remaining, Valerie Ahrens set-up Meghan Biondolillo for the go-ahead three-pointer. Island Trees never trailed again. Meghan Biondolillo led all scorers with 15 points and senior post players Meaghan Davis, Beth Hughes and Catie Hollett combined for 23 points and 28 rebounds. Angelika Paskins and Ashley Moore combined to hold Roslyn's leading scorers to just two points. Earlier in the week the Lady Dawgs defeated Great Neck North 60-41. Catie Hollett, Meghan Biondolillo and Angelika Paskins combined for 33 points to lead the offense, while Kristen Walsh and Alysha Ciaramitaro led the defense with three steals each.
The boys' varsity basketball team defeated Manhasset to improve their record to 8-3 in league play and 11-5 overall. This win was truly a team effort as 11 players scored including six points by Eric O'Reilly. The Bulldogs will play on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Carey in the first round of the playoffs.
The boys' junior varsity basketball team got back to their winning ways by defeating Manhasset 66-57. The Bulldogs were up by six at the half, but Manhasset came back and took the lead by one point in the third quarter. However, in the fourth quarter, the Dawgs came out fired up and scored 30 points in the last quarter. Scoring for the Bulldogs was Dan Bartlett with two points; Anthony Ciaramitaro with three; Tom Hart and Bryan Verbitsky with four each; John Thearle with 12, John Howard with 18 and the high scorer was Anthony Wrightington, who hit seven three-pointers and finished with 29 points. That is the highest individual point total for the season. The boys are now 9-6 overall and 6-5 in league play.
The girls' junior varsity basketball team won another game against Great Neck North with a final score of 47-30. This win brings the girls league record to 9-0. The team is continuing to work hard and play well. Rebecca Burleson played a terrific game and led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points. Other scorers included Renee Balvin with 10 points; Anne Badolato with six; Angelina DeLardi and Danielle Hastings with four each; and Lisa Barenzano, Michelle Giordano, Stephanie Rogers and Kathryn Bruno all scored two points each. The girls play their last game of the season at Roslyn.
The Island Trees wrestling team finished second in the Qualifying Tournament at Garden City. The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Matt Eberlein and junior Ralph Mirabella, who both took home gold medals. Other place winners were Jerry Franchino, Mike Molino, Peter Molino, Kris Buhagiar, Ever Reyes, Billy Caldarera and Bobby Nickel. The Bulldogs will be at C.W. Post this weekend for the Nassau County Championships. Come out and support the team.
Congratulations to the boys' bowling team that ranked tenth in the county out of over 40 teams. A big congratulations goes out to Ed Noblesala who ranked No. 2 in the Bowling Individual County Tournament. He averaged a 238 to become an All State Bowler. He will be competing in Buffalo in March.
The eighth grade girls' basketball team easily defeated Hicksville by the score of 28-18. The girls played outstanding team defense, they didn't allow Hicksville to score until two minutes before the half. Jackie Hart, Kaitlyn McCoy and Lisa Indelicato each scored eight points each, while Meagan Burns and Andrea Barbra had two points each.
The seventh grade girls' basketball team opened their season against Hicksville. Although they did not win, the girls played hard. Allie Merrill had four rebounds and four points; Maggie Milonakis had three rebounds and six points. Other girls who scored were Nicole Pellegrino, Bridget Vilbig and Colleen Smith. It was their first game of the season and a great learning experience.
