The alleged Jan. 27 attack on an 18-year-old MacArthur High School student never happened, according to Levittown Schools Superintendent Dr. Herman Sirois.
"The police called us and confirmed that it didn't happen and then we spoke to the student who admitted to us that it didn't happen as well," he explained.
A Nassau County Police Public Information Officer confirmed that the "investigation revealed the incident never occurred."
Dr. Sirois continued that the student, a Sikh, admitted to cutting his own hair and was afraid to confront his parents because of his "cultural or religion."
News 12 reported a story for two days straight that the student was "viciously beaten because of his religion," he said.
"The only people that they [News 12] ever talked to were the student and his sister," Dr. Sirois commented. "They didn't talk to the hospital or the police and it created quite a stir."
News 12 Long Island issued the following statement regarding the update on the incident: "Based on information provided by Nassau County Police, News 12 Long Island reported on Jan. 27 that detectives were investigating an alleged bias attack against a teen in Levittown. The victim's family told News 12 he was attacked because of his religion, and his sister repeated that claim in an on-camera interview. In a follow-up segment on Feb. 2, News 12 reported that the victim had recanted his entire story and that as a result, the police were changing the focus of their investigation."
Dr. Sirois said the district's concern was the disruption the incident caused.
"On Monday morning we did nothing but deal with this issue. We've provided counseling for the student because it's kind of a big lie to get yourself involved in," he said.
The officer also revealed that the student will not be charged with reporting a false crime.
"A lot of the time an individual will be charged, but it all depends on the circumstances," he added.
"I can understand the sensitivity, but nonetheless there was a disruption and a lot of money was spent responding to this alleged crime," Dr. Sirois said.
