The MacArthur High School varsity boys' basketball team is headed to the playoffs after a one-year absence.
The Generals completed a home-and-home sweep of Oceanside with a 54-47 overtime win on Friday, Feb. 2, to move into a second-place tie in Nassau Conference AA-II and clinch a postseason berth.
Senior point guard Tom Zdrodowski went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line over the final 24.2 seconds of overtime to secure the win, while junior center Tom Celentani converted a huge three-point play in the extra period. Junior guard Mike Gattus had a game-high 15 points, while senior forward Dan McDermott had 14 points and Celentani had 10 points.
With the latest victory against Oceanside, MacArthur (7-8, 4-6 league) entered the final full week of the regular season tied with Valley Stream Central and Farmingdale in the conference, one game behind first-place Massapequa.
"We're in the playoffs, but we hope to finish the regular season strongly and get a home game in the first round," assistant coach Tim McDermott said.
The Generals would earn home-court advantage in the first round by finishing in the top three in the conference.
MacArthur has one remaining regular-season home game before the playoffs begin Friday, Feb. 16. The Generals play host to Uniondale on Monday, Feb. 12, at 7:15 p.m. A ceremony honoring the team's five seniors - Matt Mege, Omid Nouravi, Kevin Ryan, Tim McDermott and Tom Zdrodowski - will be held 30 minutes before tipoff.
