Forty years ago, Island Trees was granted a charter by New York State to establish the Island Trees Public Library. To commemorate the anniversary, the library presented Charter Day on Saturday, Jan. 27. "I am very pleased to be able to participate in the celebration of the
Island Trees Public Library's Charter Day," added Assemblyman McDonough. "I am able to witness firsthand how Island Trees Library, like so many others on Long Island, is more than just books and a vital asset to the community."
Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla was also present for the event. Bonilla presented the library with a citation on behalf of Town Supervisor Kate Murray. He had words of praise for both the library and McKenna.
Said Bonilla, "As a former graduate of Island Trees High School, it's an honor to be here to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the library getting its charter. The library is the ultimate source for knowledge whether you're a child, student or adult. I'm especially proud of Frank McKenna and know he will do here what he did Wantagh, and continue the tradition and pride that make Levittown a great place to live and learn."
In addition to speakers, there were other presentations to entertain visitors. The Island Trees Community Chorus, under the direction of Chet Lazzara, performed eight songs including Just a Single Voice, Can't Help Falling in Love and I Got Rhythm. Mismatch the Clown and Yoohoo performed a magic show for children. Refreshments were served throughout the day. Of course, there was the opportunity to browse the library and see the many attractions that it has to offer.
