The MacArthur High School boys varsity basketball team had its biggest win in more than a year on Friday, Jan. 26. The Generals beat Oceanside, 54-39, marking the program's largest margin of victory since a 29-point win against Clarke in the opening round of the holiday tournament in December 2005.
Senior forward Dan McDermott had a game-high 20 points. Senior point guard Tom Zdrodowski had nine points and 10 assists, while junior shooting guard Vin Sanquini added eight points.
The Generals held Oceanside to only one field goal over the middle two quarters, outscoring the Sailors 35-8 during the 16-minute stretch, to improve to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in Nassau Conference AA-II. The 39 points allowed were the fewest by the Generals this season.
The Oceanside victory set up a mid-week game against Massapequa, with at least a share of first place at stake, despite a 74-49 loss at Baldwin, the 13th-ranked team on Long Island, on Monday, Jan. 29.
MacArthur returns to action Friday night with a rematch at Oceanside High School. After road games against Valley Stream Central and Farmingdale next week, the Generals conclude their regular season on Monday, Feb. 12 at home against fifth-ranked Uniondale. MacArthur will honor seniors including Matt Mege, Omid Nouravi, Kevin Ryan, McDermott and Zdrodowski before the 7:15 p.m. tipoff.
