The Island Trees Boys' Varsity Basketball team finished its non-league schedule with a 3-2 record. Both losses came in the finals of the Levittown Tournament in which they lost to a very good MacArthur team who will do well in the AA Conference, and to a Great Neck South team in their tournament. To get into both finals, they defeated Clarke in the Levittown Tournament and Plainview JFK in the Great Neck South Tournament. Their only non-league game which was not played as part of a tournament was against Massapequa, who they opened our season with. The score in this impressive win was 76-68 and it was led by seniors Dan Hart and Will Lopez and junior Justin Heisig.
The team's overall record is 4-2 because they defeated Glen Cove in their first league game. They were able to hold Glen Cove to under 50 points with excellent defense played by Jonathan Bartlett, Chris Caragher, Rob Fragoletti, Frank Baglivo, Ronnie Modik, Shawn Fenton and Ryan Tolan. Unfortunately, right around this time, they lost Paul Fontana for a few weeks because he had to have his appendix removed. They anxiously await his return, as they could use his play at the point guard. However, a good contribution has been made by juniors John Bruno, Bryan Valinoti and Eric O'Reilly both in games like Glen Cove and at practice.
They now get into the heart of our league play as they open up with their first "cross-over" game against North Shore. Other crossover games will be against Sewanhaka, Garden City and Lawrence. In their conference they will play Wantagh, Manhasset, Great Neck North and Lynbrook.
The junior varsity boys' basketball team had their home opener against North Shore. Right from the start it was a close game that went back and forth with numerous lead changes. The Bulldogs went into the half tied at 35. North Shore, however, came out in the third quarter and made a run, but the Bulldogs answered back in the fourth to get the win by the score of 67-59. Tommy Hart and John Howard both had big fourth quarters defensively and offensively, finishing the game with 13 points each. Dan Schulz and Bryan Verbitsky each dropped in 10 points, while John Thearle had eight. Dylan Caragher finished with six points and also had a crucial steal as the Dawgs made their run in the final quarter. Anthony Ciaramitaro and Anthony Wrightington each finished with four points as well. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the league.
The seventh grade basketball team came from 10 points down in the fourth period to defeat Howitt 43-38. The team played great defense in the fifth led by J.T. Famularo with four steals in the period and Mike Gronenthal who hit four out of six free throws. Jason Oder had the team high with 21 points.
The eighth grade volleyball team came up just short, losing to a talented Grand Avenue team three games to two. The girls played tough, but came out on the wrong side. In game one, the girls rebounded and took game two behind dominating serves by Cory Scher. Other outstanding play goes to Meagan Burns, Lisa Indelicato and Adrienne Varela.
