Three of MacArthur High School's senior baseball players took advantage of the early signing period to accept scholarships to play college baseball. Mike Anarumo signed with Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY. Le Moyne has a very successful Division I baseball program and Mike accepted a full tuition scholarship. Le Moyne Coach Steve Owens is optimistic that Mike, a left-handed pitcher, will help his program right away. Mike was a starting outfielder for the Generals last year. This past summer he became one of the most sought-after high school pitchers on Long Island.
MacArthur shortstop Steve McQuail also accepted a full tuition scholarship. Steve will be attending Canisius College, located in Buffalo, New York. Steve has been a varsity starter since 10th grade and has won All-League and All-Conference honors for the Generals. Steve also played on Long Island's gold medal winning Empire State Team this past summer. At Division I Canisius he will have a chance to play right away, as coach Mike McCrae sees Steve as an impact bat in the lineup of the Golden Griffins.
Matt Mege will be traveling south for his college days. Matt accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Newberry College, a Division II school in South Carolina. Matt excelled on the mound for Mac Arthur last year, posting a record of five wins and one loss as he won All-Conference honors. Matt is a right-handed pitcher who can also play the outfield. Newberry pitching coach Chris Youngberg is excited about having Matt on his staff for the next four years.
These three young student athletes have worked very hard to place themselves in a position to play college baseball. In addition to their athletic abilities, each has had a strong academic career at MacArthur High School, which is a crucial factor in drafting decisions made by most college coaches. MacArthur coach Steve Costello proudly recognizes these three young men for their outstanding character on and off the field. They helped lead MacArthur to a League Championship and the Nassau County Finals last season. Several other MacArthur players have been offered scholarships and are waiting to make their final decisions.
