Two candidates, Jay Cohen and John Gillen, are running unopposed for two Wantagh Fire Commissioner positions. The election will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 12 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Station 1, 3470 Park Ave., in Wantagh Station 2, 844 Wantagh Ave., in Levittown, Station 3, 2529 Neptune Ave., in Seaford, Station 4, 1191 Alken Ave. in Seaford, Station 5, 2985 Merrick Rd., in Wantagh. Fire commissioners hold five-year terms and all registered voters of the Wantagh Fire District are eligible to vote for these positions. Fire commissioner is a non-salaried town-official positions.
Jay Cohen is running for a one-year term as Wantagh Fire Commissioner to replace the position vacated by Carol Johnston. He has been volunteering for the fire department for over 32 years and first joined to "do something for the community." He said that it had interested him since childhood.
Cohen said he felt that he could bring some of his previous knowledge to this job because he served as commissioner from 1989 to 1994.
As a Wantagh resident, Cohen said his concern is with the fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers.
"I want to be sure that we use that money wisely and responsibly," he added.
Cohen is married with three children and currently works in capital equipment sales. He is running unopposed.
John Gillen is running for a five-year term as Wantagh Fire Commissioner. He has been volunteering for the fire department for over 20 years and said he first joined because he felt that it was the "best way to give something back to the community."
While this is Gillen's first time running for fire commissioner, he said that he has held many positions, including chief of the department from 2003 to 2005.
"I am running for the position because I am a homeowner and taxpayer and have been for the past 16 years in Wantagh," he said.
He added that his many experiences give him a vast knowledge with regards to spending and keeping fire taxes low.
Gillen is married with two children and currently works as a fraud investigator for a major insurance company. He is running unopposed.
