When Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes heard about a recent hardship experienced by the Repetto family of Levittown, he sprung into action.

Ziggy Repetto's son, Ziggy, Jr. was swimming at Jones Beach this summer when a rogue wave twisted his body the wrong way, leaving him with a broken neck and paralyzed throughout most of his body.

Since the July incident Repetto, Jr., 20, has been in a rehabilitation center, but is now ready to return home.

"The problem is that most Levitt homes are not handicap accessible," Hudes explained.

Hudes then approached Murphy Construction of Oceanside, who donates their time to complete a home improvement project each year around the holidays. The group already had a project for this season, but agreed to help out the Repetto family additionally.

"I couldn't ask for more cooperation from these guys," Hudes said. "It's like every year they are angels. Levittown is an incredibly giving place and they always come through when something tragic happens to a family."

Work has already begun, and the elder Repetto said he is overwhelmed with gratitude.

"I am overwhelmed at points and I'm saying thank you and it doesn't seem like it's enough," he added.

Volunteers are working to convert the garage to a bedroom, equipped with a handicap accessible bathroom for Repetto, Jr. They are also extending the living room area so that the family can spend time together.

Hudes then asked Mr. Repetto to help arrange a fundraiser to offset the cost of the added incidentals for the project.

Governor's Comedy Club in Levittown offered to host a Comedy Night on Wednesday, Dec. 13 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20. The show is for adults only. Hudes' daughter, also a Levittown resident, offered her graphic artist services by creating a flier for the event.
