During the month of October, the Levittown Historical Society was involved in many activities.
A Levittown Through the Years display was assembled for the walls and display case of the Levittown Library. Seven large poster frames held important events of each decade from 1940s to 2000s. Featured was a boy's Little League uniform whose donor wore it in the 1950s.
Many people came out to see the display, but for those who did not see it, there will be pictures in the museum in the near future.
During the Levittown Fire Department's annual open house, the society set up a table that provided entertainment for the many children who attended. Over 150 children tried to guess the amount of candy in the glass pumpkin, which held 92 pieces of candy. The one to guess the closest was 8-year-old Richard Rogers who guessed 90.
The general meeting for the month featured guest speaker, Paul DeOrsay, director of the Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor. The society holds seven general meetings annually for the public.
Museum tours for all second grade students of the Levittown School District began in October. Students learned about Levittown history and what life was like for children who lived in the late 1940s to early 50s. The children were able to play games from that period.
For a fourth year, a group of 44 North Shore High School students will tour the museum with their three teachers.
The society is involved in the Levittown 60th Anniversary Committee. They will be participating in the High Tea/Vintage Fashion Show, featuring a Chinese auction on March 10. The location is to be announced. An appraisal day is scheduled for a Sunday in April.
Visiting hours for the museum are Wednesday 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Friday 7 to 9 p.m. For further information about the Levittown Historical Society, call 735-9060 or visit www.levittownhistoricalsociety.org.
