Superintendent James Parla announced, at the regular meeting of the Island Trees Board of Education on Oct. 25, that Governor George Pataki has declared the week of Oct. 23-27 to be School Board Recognition Week. This week is designated to commend school board members for their dedicated service to the children of New York State.

Superintendent Parla first read a proclamation from Governor Pataki praising the board for its service to children and the community. He thanked the board for all they do for the school district and community "with no monetary compensation." He then read letters of thanks from students to each board member. Several people representing different constituents of the school district addressed the board members thanking them for their dedication and commitment to students, staff, parents and the entire community. Those speaking were: Vicki DelGiacco, president of PTA Council, Ellen Murphy, vice president of United Teachers of Island Trees, Peter Gibbons, president of Administrators Association and Pat Guidice, vice president of CSEA Clerical Unit. Harry Villone, president of the CSEA Custodial Unit, could not be in attendance, however, Superintendent Parla read a letter from him praising the board.

Peter Gibbons, district director of fine & performing arts, introduced six Island Trees High School students who were recently named as All-New York State vocalists and All New York State music composers. The vocalists are Kevin Covais, Victoria Fairclough and Amanda Hall. The composers are Matt Cruz, Alex Sherry and Shuyang Yao. Kevin Covais, Amanda Hall and Victoria Fairclough, under the direction of vocal music teacher Susan Oliveto, each sang a song dedicated to members of the board.

Peter Ray, president of the Board of Education, thanked all who addressed the board. He stated, "Speaking for the entire board of education, we thank everyone for their kind words and recognition. All of the posters and gifts are just great."
