While there are vast differences in the country's many places, there is one staple you would expect to find no matter where you find yourself - a library. It is quite uncommon to find a community without a library. Libraries are a central part of large urban cities and small rural towns. They serve as meeting places, landmarks, a place to preserve a community's history and, most importantly, a place where people go to expand their knowledge.

However, when the construction of Levittown began in 1947 a library was not built. As the veterans of World War II purchased the affordable mass-produced houses, they moved into a community that had playgrounds, shopping centers and even bowling alleys close by. It was not until 1951 that Abraham Levitt provided a rent-free corner storefront in the Village Green that would become the Levittown Library. The rest is literally history. Levittown became a huge success and the concept of suburbia grew throughout the United States. As for the library, it continued to expand and has become one of the largest and most distinguished libraries in the area.

On Oct. 14, the library held a day of celebration to commemorate its 55th anniversary. Many celebratory activities took place and special guests were on hand to celebrate the anniversary. Many Levittown residents came for the chance to gain an appreciation of the library's past while recognizing just how many resources it presently offers the community.

"I'm very pleased about the overwhelming attendance by the community," said the library's director, Celeste Watman. "It's a wonderful day. The staff worked hard, prepared and pulled together to help everything run smoothly."

The Friends of the Levittown Library sponsored a raffle. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray drew the first winning raffle ticket. There were many prizes awarded in the raffle with the first prize being an American Girl Doll Kit. In addition to Supervisor Murray, Legislator Dennis Dunne, Senator Kemp Hannon and Assemblyman David McDonough were also on hand for the celebration. Hannon and Dunne each presented the library with a citation.

"I appreciate Senator Hannon, Supervisor Murray, Assemblyman McDonough and Legislator Dunne for coming and being a part of our special day," Watman added.

Another special guest was American Idol finalist Kevin Covais. Covais made it to the library after an early season snowstorm left him stranded upstate. However, he made his way down to Levittown to the delight of all those in attendance. A long line assembled for the chance to get an autograph with the local celebrity.

Additionally, there were many other performances and activities throughout the day. A carnival-type atmosphere was created when the Levittown Brass and Percussion Group began the day with a performance.

To the delight of the children, Jeannette Newman of the Floral Park Library came and portrayed Mother Goose. In addition, there were caricatures done by Bill Wylie, a performance by mime Craig Babcock, balloon sculptures by Terry Parrett, a photo booth and a performance by the Levittown PAL Twirlers.

Many of those in attendance were amazed at the many activities of the day and are already looking forward to a 60th anniversary celebration. Not bad for an establishment that started in a corner storefront.
