The Boys' Varsity Soccer team was looking to keep their undefeated season alive against Lawrence High School. While Lawrence defeated the Bulldogs last year 5-0 in the playoffs, they were surely looking for some revenge. Early in the first half, Matt Brownstone won a goal kick deep in their end and crossed the ball to John Pascale who scored his second goal of the year. With the score still 1-0, late in the second half, Matt Brownstone made a run down the sideline and gave a far cross to Stephan Barea, who headed in his first goal of the year into the back corner of the net. The Bulldogs 2-0 victory put them one point behind first place in their league now. The Dogs look to continue their undefeated season at home against Hewlett.
The Girls' Varsity Soccer team is undefeated in their conference (8-0) with an overall record of 9-1. What is most impressive is that the defense has only allowed two goals all season. Captain Sarah Burleson has been the backbone of the defense along with Kristen Burgos, Steph Kaiser and Meghan Carey. In the last two weeks, the Lady Dawgs have defeated Oceanside, Baldwin, Valley Stream Central and Valley Stream South (winning 3-1, allowing their first goal in conference play). They have outscored their opposition 21-2. Leading the scoring is sophomore Alison Gronenthal, Christina Merrill, Ashley Moore and Rene Balvin. Senior Captain Meg Davis had a great game against Valley Stream South, scoring a goal and creating many opportunities. The Lady Dawgs then played South Side and although they lost 1-0, they played a tremendous game. Once again the defense was solid, allowing only five shots on goal. It was a learning experience playing the State Champions (ranked sixth in the nation and first in the state). The hard work and cohesiveness has paid off. The young ninth graders of last year are playing like veterans. The reward, as of this date, the Island Trees Lady Dawgs are ranked eleventh in the state.
The Boys' JV Soccer team tied Lawrence by the score of 2-2. Jaime Sierra and Oscar Martinez each had a goal. Lawrence, however, fought back to tie the game twice. All the players played a great game.
The Girls' JV Soccer team improved their record to 5-3 by defeating Valley Stream South 1-0. Jesse Ciserano gave Island Trees the lead and won by scoring on a penalty kick. Once again, Ashley Alesi made great saves in net.
In week 4, the Bulldogs got back on the winning track with a 44-30 win over Great Neck North. The Bulldogs opened up the game with a fumble recovery, and then marched down the field 60 yards for the first score. The Bulldogs were tested early as they went into halftime trailing 16-14. In the second half the game was back and forth and filled with plenty of excitement. In the end, the Bulldogs turned the game around and gave a total team effort, which sealed the win. Anthony Wrightington had an absolutely astounding performance on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Wrightington carried the ball 26 times and ran for 227 yards with three touchdowns and also added to the scoring with three two-point conversion runs. Defensively, Anthony led the defense with 12 tackles and one interception. Bryan Verbitsky also had an outstanding game on both sides of the ball. Bryan ran the ball 15 times and rushed for 145 yards with two touchdowns. On the defensive side, Bryan had eight tackles with one interception. The efforts of Wrightington and Verbitsky were definitely an integral part of the Bulldogs win, but without efforts of other team members, the win couldn't have been possible. Tim Burke did a great job in the second half on the pass defense. Justin Habermehl and Chris Nickel made crucial stops in the final quarter of the game. Nic Roa and Anthony Blotta also added to the defense with some huge tackles late in the game. Overall, the Bulldogs could have easily quit and lost the game. With perseverance, diligence and a total team effort, the Dawgs got their second victory to even their record at 2-2.
