The Levittown North Baseball Association 8-year-old Northstars won the Babe Ruth Metro NY Sectional Championship. The Northstars overcame the sweltering heat and fierce competition to capture the crown edging a very good LSW in the championship game 6-5 at Loring Road field. The game was one for the ages. It had four lead changes and some outstanding defensive plays by both squads. The Northstars rallied from three-run and two-run deficits to secure the title.
Throughout the tournament the Northstars showed incredible resiliency, coming from behind to win all but one game. With an undefeated record in bracket play, the team faced a tough Levittown West team. The Northstars were trailing 6-1 in their final at-bat and it looked bleak. The team's resiliency showed as they rallied for five runs to send the game into extra innings. The Northstars then exploded for 10 runs in the seventh inning for a 16-8 victory, setting up the championship game vs. LSW, who posted an impressive victory over Staten Island.
The tournament had representatives from Plainedge, Glen Cove, Island Trees and Staten Island. Levittown was well represented with teams from Levittown Central, Levittown South Wantagh, Levittown West and Levittown North. Eleven teams total took the field. Levittown Central did a superb job in hosting the tournament.
"This is a special group of kids, there is no quit in them," Northstar Manager Gerard Gino said, "It had been a total team effort, everybody - from the kids to the coaching staff to the parents and fans."
