The Girls' Varsity Soccer team has jumped off to a great start. With 16 players returning, led by Captains Meg Davis, Sarah Burleson and Kristen Walsh, the Lady Dogs have a 3-0 record. After playing scrimmages against Bethpage and Jericho to get prepared for the season, the Lady Dogs went up against previous champion (County and State) Cold Spring Harbor. They came out with a 2-0 victory. Alison Gronenthal scored on an assist by Ashley Moore and Kristen Walsh scored on an assist from Meg Davis. The defense of Sarah Burleson, Kristen Burgos, Stephanie Kaiser and Meg Carey played tenacious, turning back any scoring opportunities. In their first league contest, the Ladies faced Valley Stream Central. Once again, Alison Gronenthal started the scoring on a through pass from Renee Balvin. They won 6-0. Goal scorers were Gronenthal (3), Balvin (2) and Nichole Coradini. Once again the defense was sharp. The next game was against Valley Stream South, the team they defeated 1-0 in the semifinals last year. Needless to say, the Ladies were pumped up. They came out strong and in the second minute, Ashley Moore took a pass from Meg Davis, turned around and put it in the net. Four minutes later, Sarah Burleson cranked one in from 35 yards out. One minute later Moore scored again to make it 3-0. The rest was history. The defense held VSS scoreless. In the second half, Meg Carey put in a shot to make it 4-0. Both Coaches Goldberg and Schneider are confident that the team will keep its winning ways. However, both coaches feel the Lady Dogs have not yet reached their potential. They are a young team (10 sophomores) and are still learning. They feel the best is yet to come.
