The LAC Lightning 12U Girls' Fastpitch softball team finished up a very successful 2006 season by going undefeated in the summer open LAC tournament, beating a feisty HBQVB (Queens), in the finals, 10-4.
Pitcher Taylor Tedeschi struck out six and pitched a five-hitter, and also drove in runs with base hits in the fourth and sixth innings. Outfielder Colleen Smith drove in two runs with a key infield hit in the sixth inning to break the game open. Alexa Sussman made several nice plays at third base. Briana Lombardo pitched very well in three earlier games of the tournament, and also had the hottest bat in the tournament, and was named Most Valuable Player.
The Lightning also hosted their first Pony LAC Island Splash tournament, at Newbridge Park, from Aug. 4-6. The Lightning went 5-1, only losing in the championship game to Team Long Island, 8-5.
The Lightning also went to the Babe Ruth Regionals, in Ashley, PA, the weekend of July 28-31. The Lightning went 2-2, beating teams from Beacon, NY and Charles County, MD, before losing a disappointing game to a team from PA, finishing fifth out of nine teams. Taylor Tedeschi, Deena Farrell and Alexa Sussman all pitched very well in the tournament. The regionals were won by a team from northern NJ, Mt. Olive, whose record coming into the tournament was 75-4. The competition was fierce and the girls played well. All the players made big contributions to the team during this season including the ones already mentioned, and rest of the team, infielders Kelley Roberts, Leighann White, Sam Trotta, Taylor Kenney, catcher Justine Abramowski, outfielders Melissa Fortunato, Hayley Myles and Danielle Frantino. The team was managed by Bobby Tedeschi and coached by Joe Myles and Dean Sussman.
