I was so glad to read the Aug. 18 letter to the editor in regard to the Aug. 9 school board meeting written by Lisa Sparrow. I also not only felt embarrassed but mortified by my so-called adult members of the Levittown community. My husband who has volunteered and worked hard and responsibly on the Levittown school board for the last nine years, was treated like a criminal the night he was being recognized for his service the last three years as president of the board.
Let me make it loud and clear to all the taxpayers in the Levittown School District (because this question is asked often from residents who have no clue). None of the elected board members receive a single cent for their time and efforts in representing the concerns of the taxpayers. My husband receives huge envelopes five days a week including the summer months with each memo or letter having to be addressed. Expenses incurred, such as my phone bill, come out of my pocket, not from the district budget.
Yet with Lynn Sholl's letter, she states that the district wanted to push this pool project through without any opposition from the residents with secrecy. What a joke. The very day the pool proposal was made, the Levittown School Board asked that a committee be formed of residents and members from various organizations in Levittown to investigate this proposal.
The residents of Levittown "who do not know what's going on" as Lynn Sholl stated, do not know because they do not attend school board meetings ever. To prove this point, one resident asked the board of trustees, "how many of you reside in the Levittown School District?"
Are you kidding? One resident who was next to me at the meeting of Aug. 9 screamed out from the audience, "we will have all of your jobs if you put in this pool and I will replace you with my dog." I assume that is why my husband has run unopposed for the board three times. Few people want to volunteer such time and effort for the good of our children and our community for zero salary or benefits.
I have no idea what made the community assume that everyone on the school board even wants this pool.
Where did they get this information from?
Finally, I would like the community to know that although being a school board member in this community takes time away from my family, as he is at meetings twice a month often until midnight or beyond as well as other community events we attend while working full time. My husband has no regrets. He enjoys helping people and making our community better, smarter and safer while doing so in the least expensive way possible. He is only one vote of seven people who give up their time also for our community.
We were both raised in Levittown and went to school here. I am opposed to the pool and the field of dreams project on a personal note.
I was wondering if the man who was next to me can get his dog to run in May 2007; if so he better be able to donate a whole lot of time and energy and he won't be able to buy any dog food.
In closing, I would hope the community I am so proud to live in would show respect to the volunteers and the children in the appropriate manner; keep in mind our youth learn from their elders.
