Supervisor Kate Murray honored the 2006 recipients of the Town of Hempstead Veterans Award at this year's Salute to Veterans ceremony at Town Park Point Lookout on July 1. As part of the program, Supervisor Murray also welcomed home a Hempstead resident who recently served in Iraq. Additionally, members of the Patriot Guard, a group that dedicates itself to protecting the solemnity of services for fallen members of the military, were recognized for their invaluable contributions.

Stewart McKinney of Levittown was one of seven honorees. Stewart has been a member of American Legion Post Number 1711 for 15 years. During this period, Stewart has dedicated his free time to visiting sick and disabled veterans at the Northport VA Hospital. He lifts the spirit of veterans with a monthly Day at the Races program for hospital patients and residents of the VA nursing home. As the Service Officer for Post 1711, Stewart is generally the first person called upon when a veteran needs help and he is always quick to volunteer his services.
In addition to his time spent at the VA Hospital and Nursing Home, Stewart collects cell phones to be sent to troops overseas, and eyeglasses to be refurbished and distributed to fellow veterans.
Taking his commitment even further, Stewart attends legislative meetings to ensure that veteran's rights are maintained.
Recently, his American Legion Post instituted a flag etiquette program in area schools and than selected Stewart as the chairman of the program, knowing full-well that he was the right person to help instill a sense of pride and patriotism in local school children.
Because of his concern for and dedication to fellow veterans, the Town of Hempstead is proud to honor Stewart McKinney with its 2006 Veterans Medal.
