On Sunday, July 9, the Levittown Swimming Association (LSA) opened its 51st season with its Relay Carnival Meet at the Jerusalem Avenue pool in Levittown. The meet is the traditional opening of the LSA summer season. Relay Carnival is a fun meet which features only relay races for boys and girls (ages 7 to 18). The meet encompasses 26 races for boys and 26 races for girls in the various strokes (free, back, breast and fly) with most having several heats, bringing the total number of races to 150+.
LSA's President, Mike Fallarino, said the meet could not be run so efficiently without the dedication of the LSA coaches and members who put in an enormous amount of time during the week. Rostering a relay swim meet is no easy feat and a very difficult and taxing process that takes hours to complete. Also critical to running the swim meet are the 30 volunteers who help with various tasks that must be performed during a typical meet. From the table who update results on the computer, the announcers who keep cheering parents abreast of what race is going off, the bullpen, the times (18), runners, gate guards, officials ..., and the list goes on.
LSA also held the first of their scheduled two food drives with each swimmer contributing a non-perishable food item. The Kiwanis Club is responsible for distributing the food to families in the Levittown area.
Next up for LSA is the Tri-Pool swim meet which will be held on Monday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 18; Tri-Sectional meet on Sunday, July 23; the Novice meet on Sunday, July 30. A swim-a-thon has also been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 1.
