In round one of the Nassau County Baseball Tournament, Division beat a very good Lynbrook team 3-1 as Travis Ratliff got the win, going six strong innings, allowing only three hits while striking out nine batters.
Pat Carroll pitched a strong seventh inning of relief, inducing a double play to damper a Lynbrook rally. It should be noted the Dragons turned two double plays.
Division scored its first run on excellent base running by Nick Buccello and Sean Connochie. Run #2 was scored by Ryan Harold on a sac fly by Chris Sanabria. Connochie later doubled home Dan Karcher for Division's final run. Joe Liverani caught a spectacular game for the Dragons.
In round two of the county tournament, Division defeated a very good Wantagh team 2-0, as Sanabria was the winning pitcher, hurling a complete game shutout.
Division scored its first run on a double steal by Carroll and Harold. Division scored its second run when Harold singled home Buccello.
Division really shined defensively as the infield turned two critical double plays for the second straight day. Buccello and Brian Grubb both paced the Division offense with two hits.
The Dragons played Bethpage in round three of the tournament. The Dragons had a 3-0 lead when some erratic defense allowed Bethpage to come from behind and take a 4-3 lead, which they held onto to win the game.
Senior lefter Anthony Quatrano pitched a spectacular game and deserved a better fate.
Division's offense was led by Buccello and Chris Bauer, who accounted for all three Division runs.
Once again, Carroll played a great centerfield, making several sparkling catches.
Division came back on Friday to beat a very good Bethpage team with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory. Carroll made a beautiful bullet throw to catcher Liverani to kill a potential Bethpage rally in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Buccello and Bauer walked and Carroll bunted them over, when the Bethpage pitcher threw the ball away. This allowed Buccello to score the winning run, with Bauer being thrown out at the plate. Carroll still managed to get to third base, when Harold blasted a shot to score Carroll with the winning run.
On Saturday, the Dragons had to play Wantagh again and beat them 1-0, behind the fine pitching of Ratliff. Wantagh is a very solid team, but Ratliff was up to the challenge, pitching a one-hitter, while striking out eight batters. Carrol made another diving catch in center to rob Wantagh of a run and end the inning. Connochie played a flawless and spectacular third base, gunning down a runner at the plate and killed a few Wantagh rallies with his defense.
Division scored its only run when Grubb reached first on an error and then moved to third when Sanabria sacrified him over and Wantagh made a throwing error; Grubb then scored on a fielder's choice by Karcher for the only run of the game. It should be noted that Wantagh's Brian Rosseau also pitched a spectacular game, allowing Division only two hits, one by Carrol and one by Connochie.
This win puts Division in the county finals in a two-out-of-three series against Garden City.
This is Division's 18th trip to the County Championship Series since 1979.
