As a law enforcement professional who also heads the Sheriff Officers Association of Nassau County, I would like to applaud Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice and Senators Charles Fuschillo and Michael Balboni for their joint stance on proposing stricter DWI laws, as recently reported in the Hicksville Illustrated New sand The Westbury Times.

Our correction officers working in the Nassau County prison system look these criminals in the eyes every day and are constantly reminded of the many lives and families who have been broken and destroyed as a result of their irresponsible, senseless acts.

Drunk driving is a serious offense and should therefore be treated as such. An intoxicated individual who makes the unconscionable decision to get behind the wheel becomes not only an assault weapon against him or herself, but a grave danger to the lives of innocent motorists, pedestrians and the rest of the community at large.

Establishing harsher punishment for both first-time and repeat offenders will send a clear message that Nassau County means business in its effort to crack down on drunk drivers and motivate individuals to think twice before drinking and driving.

John Duer

President, Sheriff Officers Association of Nassau County
