Steven Delorenzo, Mike Daly and Dan Calvacca each achieved All State honors last weekend at the New York State Championships. The honor was extra special for the wrestlers. For the first time the State Championships were held on Long Island at the Nassau Coliseum. The coliseum also broke the New York State record for spectators. Seventeen thousand fans packed the arena through the tournament.
Steven Delorenzo was honored as a New York State runner-up. He had an incredible tournament. Steven bulldozed through his weight class winning three matches as he advanced into the finals. In the finals Steven was edged out by a nail-biting 8-7 defeat. Steven fell behind early in the match. In the third period Steven closed the gap but time ran out before he could finish for a victory.
Mike Daly also wrestled an impressive tournament. Mike was a 2005 New York State runner-up. Though Mike had a slow start to this season he ultimately made a believer of the Nassau County wrestling community with his end-of-the-season tournament finale. Mike upset one top ranked wrestler after another as he grappled his way to a New York State fourth-place finish. Coach Greenblatt commented that Mike's end of the season performance will be an example for future years of setting goals and never giving up.
Dan Calvacca in a highly competitive weight class brought home a sixth-place medal. Dan lost in the semifinals on a controversial referee's stalling call. Dan lost that match by 1 point. His opponent went on to winning the gold medal. In Dan's wrestle backs he also lost very tight bouts.
Congratulations to MacArthur's three All State wrestlers. The wrestlers will travel to Pittsburgh next week to compete at the nation's toughest tournament, the Senior Nationals. Good luck wrestlers!
