Last weekend March 4-5, seven boys from PAL wrestling represented Levittown and went to the USA - State Wrestling Championships. Three of our Levittown PAL wrestlers Jonathan Maldonado 90 lbs., Derek White 110 lbs. and Alexander White 165 lbs. held the Nassau County Champs title from February's County meet at Mepham High School in Bellmore. Robert Bennett, Ryan Coleman, Justin Cooksey and Kevin Herald all placed in the counties and joined the champs as a team to the State Championship.
The Levittown team met very tuff competition wrestling the Upstate and Suffolk County teams. The two day event was filled with non stop action as our wrestlers battled to stay on top. Levittown PAL Coaches Collin Curnick, Manny Maldonado and Joe Bennett guided the boys to shoot a fast single leg takedown to an assortment of pins.
On the second day four of the wrestlers had made it to the finals. Some wrestlers had four or five matches to get there. In the end when all the smoke cleared, 13-year-old 165-lb. eighth-grader Alexander White from Salk Middle School became the new 165 lbs. State Champion. He pinned his opponent Suffolk Champion Jacob Smith of Smithtown in an amazingly fast 31 seconds.
The Levittown PAL wrestlers are now on their way to compete in The Long Island Sound Championship were Long Islands top wrestlers meet Connecticut teams. This PAL wrestling program has showed its importance in mentoring young wrestlers for their future success in all the Levittown wrestling programs.
