Island Trees Wrestling Named Co-County Champions
The Island Trees Wrestling team finished the regular season with a 5-0 finish in the league. The team then went on to become co-county champions with archrival Plainedge High School. The Bulldogs roared to the county final by defeating Lynbrook 43-18 in the first round and crushing Locust Valley 53-12 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the team avenged last year's county final loss, defeating Wantagh 50-12. In the finals, the Bulldogs got off to a great start by winning six of the first eight bouts. Senior Joe Cusker won an outstanding match against defending county champ Paul Cervini at 125 lbs. After a win at 152 by Chris Coradini, the Bulldogs held a lead of 21-9. Plainedge then went on a great run, winning four bouts in a row to take a 24-21 lead. In the last bout of the evening, freshman Matt Eberlein used a takedown in overtime to secure the title. The Island Trees Wrestling Team finished the year as league champs, as well as county champs. The Bulldogs have won three league titles in the last four years and they have appeared in three straight county finals. The Bulldogs will be heading to Levittown Division for the Qualifying Tournament.
