We read with interest and disappointment the recent letter from Kathleen Vaughan Ware.

As community volunteers we have happily spent thousands upon thousands of hours during the last 30 years in unpaid, thankless, but satisfying service to the community, including many PTAs, the school district committees, youth sports groups, Levittown Property Owners Association, Levittown Community Council, CSEA Union, Levittown School Board, bowling leagues, etc.

None of this was done for money, gifts, tax credits, recognition or any other form of remuneration. It was done for the pleasure of accomplishing a job or mission or task that needed to be done. Did our children benefit from our service to the community? We hope so!

However, none of this volunteer work put our lives in real jeopardy. None risked our health, except mental fatigue. None saved the lives of those trapped in burning buildings. On very few occasions have we been wakened on a freezing winter night at 3 a.m., certainly not to save a neighbor's home from fire, or gas leaks, or downed electrical wires.

We can guarantee that we will not ask anyone for any kind of volunteers tax deduction, and believe that no one who doesn't put their lives at risk will either.

Mrs. Ware would have been better off to end her letter as follows...

"Thank you to all of the volunteer firefighters." period!

Barbara and Gary Fisch
