The possible construction of a service road through the property of MacArthur High School and Salk Middle School has been a topic of discussion at several Levittown Board of Education Meetings over the past few months.
However, the school district had emphasized there are no imminent plans to break any kind of ground on this matter.
"This service road has been discussed, not proposed," said Levittown Superintendent of Schools Dr. Herman Sirois. "We have a traffic engineering study going on to see if there even is a problem."
The reason this situation is even being monitored, is the current traffic congestion between Wantagh Avenue and Old Jerusalem Road.
According to Dr. Sirois, several ideas have been brainstormed. They include a road going from Hunt Road through the MacArthur High School practice fields into the parking lot, or from Sprucewood Drive through the rear of the west side of the football field. However, there is currently no concrete evidence that either of those would benefit the situation.
"There are no plans at all right now," Levittown Schools Director of Public Relations Audre Pullo said firmly. "We are just waiting for the traffic engineers to get back to us."
The basis for some Levittown parents' worries centers around the children's safety. Tracey Thomas of Wantagh has been vocal in letting the board know her feelings on the situation.
"I'm not having my children out at recess with a road right there and seniors speeding around in their cars at lunch," Thomas said.
When asked about the safety hazards a service road could present, Pullo replied, "without knowing if there is a problem, we're not even in a commenting position at this time."
