The Island Trees Boys' Varsity Soccer team ended the season in impressive style making the playoffs. It started with an upset victory over first-place team Floral Park 2-0. Brian Balvin and John Pascale each had a goal in a game that knocked Floral Park out of first place. The Bulldogs continued their good play, earning a 1-1 tie vs. Wantagh. Balvin continued his goal-scoring ways netting the go-ahead goal, only to see Wantagh tie the game late. The Bulldogs had one game left and needed a win to make the playoffs. The opponent, Seaford, would go to the playoffs with a win against the Dawgs.
This made for a playoff atmosphere. The game remained scoreless until late in the game when Matt Brownstone made a 40-yard run, only to be fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty shot. Brownstone walked up calmly and netted the game-winning goal, sending the Bulldogs into the playoffs. Island Trees received the 13th seed pitting them against fourth seeded New Hyde Park. The Bulldogs surprised everyone, taking a 1-0 lead in the second half off a Stephan Barea goal. The Bulldogs then gave up a late goal sending the game into overtime. After four scoreless overtime periods, the Bulldogs were faced with a shootout. It took 11 shots, but the Bulldogs eventually held strong, winning off a Matt Brownstone shot and a Kyle Riegel save to get them to the next round. The Bulldogs faced a tough Lawrence team that ended the memorable run.
Good luck to all the seniors!
