Superintendent James Parla announced, at the regular meeting of the Island Trees Board of Education on Oct. 26, that Governor George Pataki declared the week of October 24-28 to be School Board Recognition Week. This week is designated to commend school board members for their dedicated service to the children of New York State.

After Superintendent Parla read a proclamation from Governor Pataki praising the board for its service to children and the community, several people representing different constituents of the school district addressed the board members thanking them for their dedication and commitment to students, staff, parents and the entire community. Speakers included Vicki DelGiacco, PTA Council, Ellen Murphy, vice president of the United Teachers of Island Trees, Jon Segerdahl, president of the Administrators Association, Connie Carr, president of the CSEA Clerical Unit and Harry Villone, president of the CSEA Custodial Unit. Peter Gibbons, district director of Fine & Performing Arts, then introduced the Island Trees High School Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Leiann Germann. The orchestra played several songs as a tribute to the board on behalf of all students in the district.

Robert Condela, president of the board of education, thanked all who addressed the board.

"Speaking for the entire board of education, we thank everyone for their kind words and recognition," Condela stated. "It is truly an honor to serve such a wonderful school district and community."

He also thanked the UTIT for the fruit baskets each board member received and the cookies and coffee that the PTA council provided.
