In a moving ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 23, Division Avenue High School dedicated its varsity baseball field to coach Doug Robins. The most winning coach in Division history. Robins, described as a legend, an icon, and a hero, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in March of this year. Despite his recent diagnosis Robins still abides by the work ethic he perfected during 38 years as a teacher in the Levittown school system and still comes in to work every day as a coach. "Doug is an amazing man and he has taught us a lot about facing adversity with dignity," said Division principal Kathy Valentino. The more than 100 people who attended the ceremony were testament to the fact that a more fitting tribute could not have been paid to Coach Doug Robins.
Along with local politicians Gary Hudes, Kemp Hannon, and Kate Murray, speakers of the day included former player George Banos and assistant coach Tom Casey. Banos and Casey both delivered poignant speeches that painted a personal portrait of the man known to so many as Coach Robins. They described a man of class, who cares for his players and his community, and above all baseball. "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. Doug Robins' habit is baseball," stated assistant coach Tom Casey.
When Robins took to the podium he made sure to first thank his family, especially his wife Kathleen who stood by his side for the duration of the ceremony. He then peppered the crowd with tales of baseball and life and thanked the many people who helped make the Division Avenue High School baseball program the success it has become over the years. Coach Robins professed a deep-seated love for the community of Levittown and stated that he had no regrets, "I'd do it all over again if I could."
As the Division Avenue varsity baseball field has stood for many years and become symbolic of Levittown itself, so will the newly christened Doug Robins Field. In the words of assistant coach Tom Casey, "tradition doesn't graduate."
