Dennis Dunne, Sr.

Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr. has served Nassau County's 15th Legislative District for 10 years and said he plans on "continuing to serve the people."

"There's an awful lot of things that we've been able to accomplish," Dunne said.

Dunne, who's legislative district encompasses East Meadow, Island Trees, Levittown, North Wantagh, Salisbury and portions of Seaford, New Cassel and Westbury, is a lifelong Levittown resident. He said his accomplishments so far include turning sumps into soccer fields, revitalizing Wantagh with Operation Downtown, enlarging sewer systems in order to alleviate flooding and drainage problems and, more recently, getting Jerusalem Avenue repaved.

In addition, Dunne said he "was able to secure crossing guards at Wisdom Lane Elementary School and Salk Middle School and a speed indicator on Salisbury Park Drive."

Dunne has served on the Rules Committee for the entire time he has served in the legislature.

"When the committee is in session, I always try to get [Levittown] our piece of the pie," Dunne explained.

Dunne said his first accomplishment when voted into office was to create a "campus feel" at MacArthur High School. A stream running through the school grounds was piped underground and covered in order to expand the fielded areas.

"We're going to try and put that further through the rest of the school yard so they can have more fields," Dunne explained.

Dunne's future goals span throughout the legislative district he currently serves.

Seaford Harbor School is on a peninsula and there is only one road in and out and Dunne is trying to get another road put across the marsh.

In addition, Dunne said he has a bunch of small projects in the works for Levittown.

"I am trying to get Polaris Field fixed for Island Trees Baseball," Dunne said. "I was able to get a contract so that we [Island Trees Baseball ] were able to get sole use of it, but I want to spruce it up. I played on that field as a child and I want that field to be better than it was when I played on it."

By far, Dunne said his biggest goal for the future is keeping taxes down. In the past he said he fought every tax increase brought before the legislature.

"I hate seeing the For Sale signs going up in our communities block after block," Dunne said. "I want to keep the people here."

Dunne also said yearly reassessments are "destroying our community."

"The people who lived here for many years, who put this community together, are being forced out," Dunne continued.

Dunne serves as president of the Levittown/Island Trees Veterans Council and is president of the Marine Corps Coordinating Council. He is also a member of the American Legion, VFW, the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club, the Disabled American Veterans and the Levittown Chamber of Commerce. He served as co-chair for the 40th and 50th Anniversaries of Levittown.

Dunne is running on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines. He is married with two children and several grandchildren.

John Clark

Seeking the 15th Legislative District seat for the second time and running on the Democratic party line is John Clark, who said his philosophy of government comes from Habitat for Humanity.

"They say give people a hand up, not a hand out," Clark said.

Clark, a social worker at North Shore University Hospital, said he tries to engage people. He said he was one of a few in his industry who supported welfare reform in 1996.

"You want to get people off the dependency trail, because if they can stand on their own two feet, you don't know what their limit is," Clark said.

If elected, Clark said his primary goal would be to open a district office.

"When the legislature was formed 10 years ago, local offices were recommended but never really written into the law," Clark said. "The time is right to do it. I want to show people that government is supposed to work for them. They shouldn't have to trek into Mineola."

In addition Clark said he wants to hold town meetings as much as possible and become involved in sponsoring legislation.

"There's a lot of people out there and they don't know how to call Town Hall," Clark said.

Clark said "Nassau County's current state of financial stability" also prompted his bid for election.

"Maybe there's a possibility that Nassau won't be borrowing to pay its bills every day," Clark said.

Becoming what he calls a "citizen legislator" is also important to Clark, he said.

"I am a taxpayer first," Clark said. "To have a professional politician is not always beneficial. People in general are turned off to what politicians have become."

Clark said he "attended candidate school at the University of Connecticut" last summer. He also taught civics classes at Molloy College and Stony Brook University.

"I would also offer this as part of the legislative office," Clark said. "It's about how to take your two cents to Town Hall, or if necessary to Washington. Sometimes it might unlock the key to the problem."

Clark is a member of the Wantagh-Seaford Homeowner's Association and Seaford Democratic Club. He is also the public policy coordinator for St. Francis de Chantal Church in Wantagh.

"I am trying to get people away from just praying that things will happen and make something happen," Clark explained.

Additionally, in his role, Clark said he lobbied for a traffic light at the intersection of the church and King Kullen in Wantagh.

"We had a petition drive to sort of wake up everybody," Clark said. "In one weekend we had 3,000 signatures because it got on everybody's agenda."

If elected, Clark's legislative district would encompass the areas of East Meadow, Island Trees, Levittown, North Wantagh, Salisbury and portions of Seaford, New Cassel and Westbury. Clark is a lifelong resident of Long Island. He and his wife Terry, who have a daughter, lived in Levittown for 15 years and moved to Wantagh a few years ago.
