The Girls' Varsity Soccer team started the season in tough Conference I. Their first game was against Massapequa, last year's undefeated champion (tied with South Side). Although they were defeated 3-0, Coaches Goldberg and Schneider were pleased with their performance. Goalie Jen Macaro was outstanding, making some unbelievable saves. The girls played tough and were complimented by the Massapequa coaches and also the referees. Both coaches are expecting to build on this game to keep a high profile. Captains Kate Moore, Meghan Sguigna and Michelle Topel are setting the tone for a fine season with their leadership.
The Boys' Varsity Soccer team for 2005 is poised and ready to carry on the rich tradition of playoff soccer at Island Trees. The Bulldogs look to rebuild after graduating 13 seniors from last year's Final Four team. The outlook looks good with returning seniors Dimitri Rouskas, Giovanni Oliveri, Brian Balvin and juniors Byron Foong and Kyle Riegel. In addition, the team looks forward to adding several players from last year's successful Junior Varsity team. The Bulldogs will be in League 3 competing with Seaford, Wantagh, Sewanhaka, Carle Place, Floral Park and Great Neck South. The Bulldogs' goals are to capture a league title and make a run at a county championship.
The Island Trees Boys' JV Soccer team began its season with two tough fought victories. The first was against strong, non-league opponent, East Meadow. The boys took what looked like a commanding 3-0 lead with goals by Kevin Vilbig, Brad Fliller and Dave Valencia. East Meadow fought back, but Island Trees held on for the 3-2 victory. The boys also won their first league game against Great Neck South by the same score of 3-2. The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Tom Willoughby. Trailing only 2-1 at the half, the boys came out strong in the second half. With goals by Eric Fazio and Shaun Rutherford, the boys took the lead and courageously held on for the victory. Playing a big part in their victories, with some timely saves, was goalkeeper Rob Collelouri. The defense, anchored by Kevin Vilbig, Rob Carlson, Paul DelGiacco and Kieran Riegel, has given the team every opportunity to win games. Dan Weinman has provided solid mid-field play and a timely assist in game one. With great teamwork and solid all-around play, the Bulldogs look to continue their winning ways.
The JV Volleyball team competed in the Wantagh Invitational. The girls started off slowly, losing two games against West Hempstead, but gained confidence and played extremely well as they took a game against a solid Port Washington team. The final game against Kellenberg was thrilling. The highlight of the game was a huge block by Danielle Doller and Sue Yao to keep the game close. Great job to the entire team.
In league play, the JV Volleyball team defeated Division in five games. After losing the first two games, the girls stormed back, winning the next three games. Margaret Martinez, Sue Yao and Jillian Foster came up big with dominating serves that helped the team to victory. Great job to all the girls on an outstanding game.
