The Levittown Board of Education met on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. With no reports, correspondence or comments from the public to be heard, the board moved to action items and new business.

Superintendent Dr. Herman Sirois informed the board that beginning this year, all newly elected and re-elected school board members will be required to take a mandatory state sponsored training course. The six-hour course will be administered by the New York State School Board Association for a fee. Dr. Sirois stated that after conferring with the NYSSBA and other area school superintendents he would like to gather a consortium of three or four districts to participate in the training.

The board then appointed Kenneth Auer, Diane Shapiro and James Moran as representatives of the Levittown Board of Education to the Levittown Teachers Policy Board for the 2005-2006 school year.

The board unanimously approved a contract for the installation of a new LED sign at Division Avenue High School in the amount of $54,800. The board said it is hopeful that the sign would be installed by the start of the school year but it is not guaranteed.

By a vote of 5-2, the board rejected a motion that effective with the May 16, 2006 school board election and school budget vote, the polling places for all eligible district voters shall be contiguous with the elementary attendance zones, wherein all voters shall be assigned to vote in the elementary attendance zone in which their house is located.

Dr. Sirois advised the board he would set up a planning session pertaining to fund-raising and the refurbishing of the track, tennis courts and field at LMEC. The idea, proposed by Keith Schneider and dubbed the "field of dreams," would be used by school athletic teams and members of the community.

The board will reconvene at the Memorial Education Center for a planning session on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m. A regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m.
