The Levittown Athletic Club's 12 & Under Girls Softball Babe Ruth Metro New York Tournament was held over the weekend of July 8-11. The first game was rained out on Friday evening, but with a lot of help from the coaches and parents, the fields were playable Saturday morning. This was a double elimination tournament with eight games being played on Saturday with teams from Levittown, Glen Cove, Merrick, Westerliegh (Staten Island), Pelham Bay (Bronx), Tuckahoe (Westchester) and HBQVB (Queens).
Sunday's games started at noon with Pelham Bay versus Glen Cove, Pelham Bay won the game with an early lead. Levittown played HBQVB, winning in extra innings when Jennifer Jean scored on an infield out from third. Pelham Bay then met HBQVB and won a close game 4-3. Levittown then met Pelham Bay in the finals. The score seesawed back and forth with Pelham Bay winning 5-4 forcing a final game on Monday. The winner of this game will play in New Jersey for the Regional Title July 22.
LACs 14 & Under Girls played in Pelham Bay at the same time while our 16 & Under played at HBQVB in Queens. The two teams were eliminated after three games, a highlight in the 16 & Under game against Stuyvesant (Manhattan) was Katie Chaput's 220-foot homerun. This was the first homerun hit over the left field fence this season at HBQVC, and it was obvious it was gone once Katie swung the bat.
Pelham Bay came back to Levittown Monday evening to play a final game against LAC. Pelham Bay took the early lead with one-run in the first inning, followed by another in the second. LAC came back strong to take a 3-2 lead and added to it each inning to go into the eighth inning with an 8-2 lead. Pelham Bay didn't give up and battled back with four more runs. In the sixth and final inning LAC held them with excellent pitching by Franki Posillico. She had some great fielding by Jennifer Jean and Justine Abramowski. LAC now gets to travel to New Jersey to represent New York in the Regional's. There is a World Series, this year being hosted by Varina Virginia. Good luck to our Metro New York Babe Ruth Champions.
LAC would like to thank the Town of Hempstead Parks Department for all of their help with the fields at Azalea Road this season. They kept the season moving by preparing and maintaining the fields throughout this rainy four months. They would also wish to thank their neighbors who live on Azalea Road. They have put up with a great deal of traffic this year with the league growing to over 350 girls.
