A big congratulations to the Island Trees Power for being the State Cup Champs by beating a heavily favored Brooklyn Patriots team on Saturday, June 11. The game was coached by Bob Vilbig, and assisted by Bob Merrill. The team played in Rockland County on an extremely hot and sweltering day.

Bridget Vilbig scored the first goal with a beautiful assist by Emily Lucas. Island Trees was on a roll. Maggie Milonakis scored the second goal with a perfect direct kick into the upper left corner above the Patriots goalie's head. The Patriots came back strong with a goal to bring the score to 2-1, but Theresa Hinshaw came back and scored from the 30-yard line with a powerful kick to bring the score to 3-1 by the end of the first half.

During the second half, the Patriots came back fast and physical to score and bring the game to 3-2 Island Trees. The Power did not give up. Bridget Vilbig scored a second goal assisted by an unstoppable Jessica Campisi. The Power continued to play hard with great effort by April Rochon and Jenna Rothar, and unbelievable saves by goalie Jean Marie Cassar.

Unbelievable defense was performed by Nicole Pellegrino, Maggie Milonakis and Corrine Dodge. They were able to shut down and frustrate a very powerful Patriot team. Allison Merrill had the toughest job of all by staying glued to Brooklyn's No.1 player and keeping her off her game. The midfield kept Brooklyn in check throughout the game by a determined Theresa Ng and Courtney Boniello. Theresa also had some unbelievable throw-ins.

The game ended with a final score of 4-2 I.T. Many hugs and smiles were exchanged. The Power would like to dedicate the game to Emily Cranmer, who was unable to play this season due to an injury, and to Stephanie Brown, who was missed greatly in the game. Coach Bob would also like to thank his assistant coach Mike Pellegrino, and all the other fathers who helped during the season - Bob Merrill, Gus Milonakis and Ken Rochon. An extra big thanks to Warren Ng for handling flag duty all season. Thanks also to all the parents for their enthusiasm and their support.

The Power would like to invite any players interested in trying out for this great and successful team to tryouts on: Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m., and Monday June 27, 6 p.m. All tryouts are located at Stokes School.
