At press time on Wednesday, June 22, the Levittown Tribune received a statement from the office of the superintendent of Levittown Schools regarding the arrest of a teacher in the district. The statement follows:
"One week ago, on June 15, the Levittown School District received information regarding alleged inappropriate contact between a teacher and several students. The district took immediate action including notifying the police, removing the teacher from school pending completion of an investigation, an investigation into the allegations and interviewing several students."
"Within a day, the district had secured sufficient information to justify notification of the New York State Department of Education. The Special Victims Unit of the Nassau County Police Department requested that the district remain silent until it gathered enough evidence to make an arrest. The arrest of the teacher took place on Wednesday afternoon, June 22. This arrest was made possible by the cooperation and swift actions of the Levittown School District, the Nassau County Police Department, the Nassau County District Attorney's Office and the courage of victims who came forward. Now that an arrest has been made, the district is proceeding with the termination of the teacher as quickly as allowed by state law."
The Levittown Tribune will have a follow-up story in next week's edition.
