On Saturday, June 11, the Phyllys, the Island Trees Girls U-10 Soccer Travel Team, won their last game of the regular season against the Jericho Lady Jaguars 3-0, finishing the season in first place in their division. The Phyllys played hard and tough on an extremely warm day. Two quick goals were scored by fast forward Marianna Ferraro, which put the Phyllys ahead in the first half of the game. A second half goal was scored by forward Katie Steinwall.
As usual, great defense and support was played by Kaitlyn Abreu, Alexa Del Piano, Elizabeth Cortez and Erin Neuman. Forwards Fallon Flanagan, Alyssa Raines and Tori Tedeschi applied great pressure on the defense, keeping the ball in the opponent's end. Strong support up the middle by Kristin Duthie and Alyssa Fiore, along with strong and steady goalkeeping by Brianna Ferrara, helped to win the game.
On Sunday, June 12, the Phyllys played in the Waldbaum's Cup Final at Stony Brook against the Commack Storm. It was a brutal day temperature-wise but the Phyllys hung in there playing tough as usual. The final game pit the first place Nassau Division N4 team against the first place Suffolk Division S4 team. The Commack Storm started off strong and scored the first goal, leading after the first half 1-0. In the second half, the Phyllys turned up the pressure and took several shots on goal.
In the final seconds of the game, the Phyllys scrambled, taking numerous fast and furious shots on goal, but in the end a great final second save by the Commack Storm's goalie denied the Phyllys the tying goal and the possibility of overtime play. The Phyllys received finalist medals for their fantastic efforts.
