The Levittown PAL sixth-grade Tomahawks finished their season with a 7-2 win over a very determined Bethpage lacrosse team. From the start it looked like it was going to be the Tomahawks' day. After getting possession of the ball off the opening face-off by Patrick Dreiss, the Tomahawks worked the ball offensively until there first possession ended with Brendan McNamara putting in the first goal of the game off a perfect feed from Harry Sopp. Patrick Dreiss, Thomas Nuckel, and Jamie McAndrew each put in solo goals to bring the score to 4-0 ending of the first quarter. Dreiss scored one more in the second quarter after receiving a great pass from teammate Patrick Buckley.
The defense was once again fantastic. Zack Trimboli, Tyler Hassett, Jordan Rose, Max Transou and Zach Esposito dominated, keeping the determined Bethpage offense scoreless until late in the second quarter. At half time the score was 5-2 with the Tomahawks on top.
Harry Sopp scored a goal early in the third quarter off a pass from Thomas Nuckel. That gave the Tomahawks the cushion they needed to slow things down and control the ball for the rest of the game. Dennis Rothar, Timothy Bailey, Daniel Maini, Mathew Mascoli, and Michael and Joseph Esposito dominated ground balls. It seemed like the ball was in the offensive end of the field for the entire second half. When Bethpage did get the ball offensively they had to face Thomas McDevitt in the cage. McDevitt along with his fantastic defense shut out the Golden Eagles offense for the rest of the game. Joseph Esposito put in a goal late in the game for a 7-2 score. Like the rest of their games this season, this was a total team effort.
The Tomahawks finished the year with a 5-2-1 record. The impressive thing about this team is that 11 different players got involved in the scoring of 56 goals. Out of those 56 goals more than half (30) were assisted. The goalie play and defense were the most improved aspects of this team. Several players designated themselves as defensemen and rose to the challenge. Both goalies had a great year, each having stretches during a game where they dominated the game. Teamwork and hustle were the dominating characteristics of this team. The next challenge for these fine young men will be playing for their respective middle schools.
Levittown PAL Girls third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade lacrosse team had their last game of the season this weekend and won it big. The game started off with mixed feelings as the Levittown attackers had 10 shots on goal, all of which were stopped by the Seaford goalie. Then the opposing team, Seaford, started to warm up their offensive game and soared ahead with a two-goal lead. The Levittown girls allowed very little time to pass before tying the game at 2-2. Their extreme hard work on both defense and offense lead them to an 8-3 lead in third quarter.
As the game continued, smart playing and awesome speed on the Levittown team tired out Seaford whose skills began to slip away. Awesome offense was played by Chrissy Schreiber with two goals, Allison Merrill with two, Jenna Rothar with two, Emily Lucas with one, Courtney Boneillo with one, and Kristina Coiro with one goal along with mostly all the assists. Also, Bridget Vilbig, Nicole Pellegrino, Danielle Dreiss, Karen Downs, and Juliette Strahan were a huge help on offense with their awesome catching and throwing skills when we were leading the game by four and needed three completed passes.
Their defense was nearly impenetrable -- great ground ball pick ups and very smart movement of the ball to transition back into the attack zone. Defense was lead by Dana Aragona, Mary Dmuchowski, Nicole Salonia, Alexis Mayes, Melissa Feinberg, Nicole Lopiccolo, Taylor Moran, and Allison Leotta. In goal we had Brianna Ferrara, Kerrilynn Healy, and Allison Merrill. All goalies did a great job with anywhere from 2-5 saves each and played amazing on the field as well as in the goal. The final score was 9-7 and all in all, the girls played a fantastic game.
They finished their season with a 5-3 record and they should be extremely proud of all their hard work. The coaches would like to say thanks to all the parents for all their help through out the entire season and for understanding the busy schedules the coaches had to work with.
