The Varsity Softball team had done it again! The girls defeated Division 2-1 in the semi-final round of the Nassau County playoffs. Gina Brewer drove in the first run in the 3rd inning and Kristine Cunningham hit a double, driving in Colleen Cunningham for the go ahead run in the 6th inning. Lauren Poplawski struck out 6, had no walks and allowed only 3 hits. The girls take on Seaford in the Nassau County finals next.
The Varsity Baseball Club advanced to the quarter finals of the Nassau County Baseball playoffs with a 9-0 rout of the Bethpage Eagles. The League Champion Bulldogs took it to Bethpage from the get-go, pounding out 11 hits in an offensive blitzkrieg. Steve Perkowski was outstanding and dominant on the mound. He tossed a complete game, 4-hit shut-out, striking out 4 and only allowing 2 walks. It is Steve's team leading 4th win in a row. Offensively, the Miracle Bulldogs were led by Pete Marchelos. Pete continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 4, including a double and a booming 2 RBI triple in the 3rd inning. Matt Acton went 2 for 3, including a big triple also in the 3rd inning. Island Trees played stellar defense all day, committing not one error in the field. Pitching and defense is a recipe for success. The infield of David Darcy, Justin Muscarella, Bryan Marksteiner and Scott Sadowski flashed leather all day. Outfielders Ilker Ucaner and Rob Lovaglio were solid in the outfield. Catcher Paul DelGiacco was his usual solid self behind the plate. The Bulldogs continue to ride the Magic Carpet straight to the quarterfinals. Island Trees travels to Clarke with a match up against the #2 seed Rams These two teams have been rivals for the last seven years and it looks like it's going to be another barnburner.
The Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team ended its season with a tie against Bellmore/Kennedy and a win against Sewanhaka. Samantha Modik had the tying goal against Kennedy and a career high of 5 in the game against Sewanhaka. Gina Ciaravino, who led the defense all season, scored her first goal. The girls' final league record was 5 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties. For a first year varsity program this is impressive!
A special congratulations to 8th grader, Michelle Duffy. Michelle has been competing with the Varsity Track and Field team this season and has had an outstanding season. At the Nassau County Championship Meet, Michelle became county champ in the high jump of five feet. Michelle also became an All County selection in the 800m with a 3rd place finish in that event. Michelle completed her bid to be All County in three events as she ran a personal best 5:06 in the 1500m to finish 3rd in the county. Michelle will attempt to qualify to make the New York State Championship Meet when she competes at Mitchel Field.
The 7th grade Baseball team extended their win streak to five games by defeating Hicksville 16-4. Bryan Verbitsky got the win. The team's offense was led by Anthony Petrossian, who had 4 RBIs and Rob Panebianco and Joe Mezzapesa, who each had 2 RBIs.
The Boys' Lacrosse team played a strong game in their victory over Berner. The defense gave a strong team effort, led by our goalie, Joe Gombar. Our offense worked hard together to seal the victory. Some of the standouts on offense were John Howard, Tom Enders, George Athan and John Thearle.
The Lady Dawgs Lacrosse team brought home their second win in a week against Salk with a record of 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. The score was 12-5. Alison Gronenthal had 3 goals and 2 assists. Also scoring 2 goals were Rebecca Burleson and Ashley Moore.
The track team took 1st place against Bethpage and Hicksville with some outstanding performances. Jackie Kupfer, Jennifer Cruz, Meghan Hollett, Kaitlynn VanAlst and Jackie Paskins all took 1st place in every heat of the 55 mm, blowing away their opponents. Jeffrey Malkiel and Giuseppe Ferraro had great times in the 55m hurdles. Kevin Yanez and Billy Kuch stepped up for the boys and did a great job in all their events. Joseph Cigna also did a great job. Ashley Werner and Jade Coyle continue to work hard and contribute greatly to the team. Yovani Cruz jumped to victory in the long jump and Christina Doscher took 1st place with an excellent time in the 100 m.
