The gutty, gritty Varsity Baseball Club took two important league games from the Roslyn Bulldogs. First Island Trees defeated Roslyn by a score of 5-4 in extra innings. Scott Sadowski's walk-off single drove in a hobbling Matt Acton for the winning run. Pete Marchelos pitched 3 2/3 innings of 1 hit ball to notch his first varsity win. Ilker Ucaner went 3 for 4 in the win. In the second game, the Bulldogs defeated Roslyn 8-5. Bryan Marksteiner had a big day going 3 for 4 with 5 stolen bases. Sophomore Dan Fazio was called up the JV due to injury and went 2 for 3 with an RBI in his first varsity start. Fred Koromi picked up the win with solid relief pitching from Steve Perkowski who picked up the save. This "never say die" team is on the march toward the Nassau County playoffs.
The JV Baseball team swept the Roslyn Bulldogs in a 3 game series. Joe Sorisi pitched a complete game, giving up 3 hits, 1 earned run and 5 strikeouts. Joey Vaskas led the offense with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Kevin Crowley had 3 hits and 2 stolen bases. Matt Brownstone had a huge squeeze bunt in the 4th inning to change the momentum of the game.
The JV Softball team won 22-10 against Floral Park! Great fielding by Angela Panebianco, Jen Abramowski and Rachel Trager. Great catching by Kristin Vesely and great pitching by Sam Rooks. Amazing hitting by Jamie Ruiz and Ashley Alesi with home runs and Sam Dugal with a triple.
The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team has another victory to add to their record. The Lady Dawgs defeated Roslyn 13-6. Kate Beale and Meghan Sguigna had career highs, scoring 4 goals each. Sam Modik had 3 goals and Val Ahrens had 2. Sarah Burleson was a great team player with 4 assists and Brianne Lopez contributed with 1 assist. Mary Condela and Dom Witteck transitioned the ball nicely down the field. Great hustles were made by Kiersten Bortell and Kristen Walsh. Maggie Pepitone kept the game alive with 9 amazing saves.
The Island Trees JV Girls Lacrosse team is continuing to build into a dominant squad. The Lady Bulldogs hold a 4-4 record on the season so far, including a victory over Wheatley most recently. The Bulldogs outscored Wheatley by 8 goals with a final score of 11-3. Jackie Buckley continued her offensive success adding 3 more goals during this game alone. Kristen Weinman added 2 goals during this game and has assisted the team tremendously with transitioning the ball offense to defense. Heather Werling has played solid defense and caused several turnovers on our defensive end of the field. Captain Lauren Moore's discipline, hustle and strong communication have proven to be key ingredients to the team's success this year. The girls remain confident in continuing their impressive season and building a tradition here at Island Trees High School.
The Boys JV Bulldog Lacrosse team defeated a tough North Shore team by the score of 5-3. The Bulldogs were led by goalie Billy Caldarera who registered 10 saves in the first quarter alone. Kevin Buonomo, Peter Molino, John Bartlett and Chris Henken played great defense throughout the whole game. Offensively, Mike Annarella, Ray Megliola and Danny Carlson gave the Bulldogs the spark they needed to pull out a tough win.
The Varsity Badminton team made it 5 wins in a row with a solid 5-2 win against the East Rockaway Rocks. With this win, 4th doubles Lauren Wielgus and Jessica Panewicz earned All Conference status with an automatic bid in the Individual Conference Championships in May. Congratulations Jess and Lauren!
The Girls Track team had several standout performers at their quad meet. Lindsay Hallas paced the way for the team, scoring in 3 events. Lindsay won the triple jump, placed 2nd in the 400 m. and high jump. Michelle Duffy won both of her events, the 1500 m. and the high jump. Michelle Meyer ran her best of the season in the 400 m. and finished 3rd. The 4 x 100 relay team of Bernadette Marglin, Kystyna Malewski, Loren Wignall and Michelle Meyer finished 3rd.
The Boys Track team defeated Plainedge by a score of 52-40. The team was once again led by Christian Blauvelt, who won the triple jump, high jump and long jump and set personal records in 2 of his events. Alex Romero also had a strong meet, winning the 110 m. high hurdles and placing 2nd in the 400 m. intermediate hurdles. Other scorers for the team included Mike Palumbo and Ryan Eick in the hurdles; Steve Battafarano, 2nd in the 3200 m. and 3rd in the 1600 m.; Chris LoFaso was 2nd in the long jump and 4th in the 200 m.; Tom Waldron in the shot put; John Pascale in the discus; Justin Heisig in the high jump and triple jump; and the 4 x 800 m. relay team of Dan Weinman, Justin Heisig, Steve Battafarano and Alex Romero.
