Phil Goldberg, a resident of Levittown, was recently inducted into the Long Island Junior Soccer League's (LIJSL) Hall of Fame at its 23rd Annual Soccer Convention Dinner. Phil, president of the Island Trees Soccer Club for the past 20 years, was recognized by LIJSL for his dedication to the club and its children.
Serving as the club's president since 1982, Phil is the longest serving president in the LIJSL. Under his leadership, the club introduced the Sue Link Memorial Indoor Tournament, a tribute to an Island Trees player who was killed by a drunk driver. The tournament also raises money for high school seniors who have participated in the Island Trees Soccer Club. Phil was also responsible for the club's annual Memorial Day Festival.
With the children's best interest at heart, Phil has dedicated many long evenings at president meetings to ensure the children are receiving the maximum benefits the club has to offer. He has provided special clinics for new coaches to make certain they are ready to work with the youngsters. Phil's passion for soccer and steadfast support of children has inspired and touched the lives of many former players, some of whom have returned to the club to volunteer as coaches and trainers.
"We congratulate Phil on his induction in the Long Island Junior Soccer League's Hall of Fame," said LIJSL President Addie Mattei-Iaia. "He represents what our league is all about, 'Building Character through Soccer.' Phil's coaching style revolves around creating a cohesiveness among the players that exists beyond the field and taking a genuine interest in all the players -not only as athletes but people."
