Two days after a 26-year-old Franklin Square woman was found shot to death in the trunk of her car in Queens, a Levittown man was taken into custody by New York Police Department detectives and charged with her murder.
Before her body was found on Tuesday, Feb. 22, Steven Schiovone, 35, of Levittown refused to speak to NYPD detectives and Nassau County Police about her disappearance. He was then arrested on unrelated traffic violations in a Hempstead Traffic Court on Thursday, Feb. 24. After further investigation, Schiovone was charged with the 2nd degree murder of the victim, who was pregnant with her second child at the time of her death.
According to police, Schiovone shot the victim because she would not get an abortion and insisted upon telling her ex-husband, Schiovone's half-brother, that it was Schiovone's baby she was carrying.
Police say Schiovone called a friend the night of the murder, asking him to hide the alleged murder weapon. That friend later disclosed details from their conversation to police, leading them to Schiovone.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that blood found on the front seat probably means she was shot there and then put into the trunk. However Schiovone's lawyer, William Petrillo, said he knows nothing of what happened.
"He had absolutely nothing to do with this," Petrillo told the media.
