Homicide Squad detectives from the Nassau County Police Department responded to check on the welfare of residents at a Sprucewood Drive home in Levittown on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 12:36 p.m.

According to the police report, detectives from the 8th Precinct began investigating the homicide/suicide of two brothers at the residence after gaining forced entry. Officers reported they found the bodies of two males inside the home. The report goes on to state that one male was the victim of gunshot wounds to the chest and the other male was the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The bodies of John Nielson, 54, and his brother Roland, 59, were transported to the morgue at Nassau University Medical Center, pending a medical examiner's report. John, who was mentally disabled, was being taken care of by his older brother since their mother's passing.

According to a woman who works in the Senior Center at the Yours Ours Mine Community Center in Levittown, the younger Nielson, who had regularly visited the facility in the past, hadn't been there in quite some time.

"He hasn't been here in over five years," the employee stated. "He used to volunteer in our Alzheimer's program." She went on to say that when John volunteered at YOM he "either walked or drove."

"He was pretty high functioning and independent," she said. "I don't know what happened in the past five years though. Maybe something did happen and he became more severe."

She went on to explain that a case manager from a different agency was the one who requested a welfare investigation by the police and that police haven't found any family members of the Nielson brothers.
