The Long Island Junior Soccer League is very pleased to announce that Phil Goldberg of the Island Trees Soccer Club will be inducted into the LIJSL Hall of Fame at the league's annual convention from March 4-6 at the Hilton Long Island in Melville.
Phil has been president of the Island Trees Soccer Club for over 20 years, the longest-running current tenure as president of an LIJSL club. As president, Phil has worked extremely hard to make the Island Trees Soccer Club a success. He was instrumental in establishing the Sue Link Memorial Indoor Tournament as well as their annual Memorial Day Festival for intramural teams and is still actively involved in the running of these events. The proceeds from the Sue Link Tournament are awarded each year to graduating seniors from the club in honor of Sue Link, a player from Island Trees who was killed by a drunk driver. These two major events held by the club each year have continued to exist mainly through his efforts.
Phil continues to strive to keep the Island Trees Soccer Club alive and kicking. He is an active member of LIJSL, attending president's meetings, sometimes well into the night due to his own ramblings. Despite his gift of gab, it is always the children's interest that he is concerned for. He offers clinics for new coaches and takes on a new travel team every few years. Needless to say, he has no children of his own still playing for the club.
Phil gives older players the opportunity to give back to the club by training his young teams. The travel teams that he has coached over the years have been extremely successful on and off the field. He has traveled all over the country with these teams through the years and has given hundreds of players' memories that will last a lifetime. Many of his former players have returned as coaches and trainers. Some are coaching on the high school and college level. Another sign of his success is that his teams have remained intact from under-10 through under-19. Phil obviously takes an interest in all the players as people and has developed lifelong friendships with players and their families.
Phil somehow finds the time to coach the girls varsity soccer team at Island Trees High School and has served as the coordinator for the LIJSL's Exceptional Senior Games.
