In the 1950s our community consisted mostly of veterans from World War II. When they returned and took residence here they wanted to remember their fallen friends and family members who did not return from the war. The men and women of Island Trees did this by naming a school in honor of all those who died. It was dedicated the Island Trees Memorial School.
On Oct. 23, the Island Trees Board of Education disgraced our community by renaming the school after a school employee who received a high salary, huge retirement package and got to work in a great district and community for 20 years. If you didn't know about the name change that is because the board did not publicize it or post it. They also broke the Sunshine Law by discussing the name change behind the community's back.
We are trying to give the school back to those brave soldiers who gave us the freedoms that this board of education and central administration are trying to deny. They have used all kinds of tactics and lies in an attempt to suppress our community.
Please join us at a rally on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at The Island Trees Memorial School on Wantagh Avenue and again at the Island Trees Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. at Gallow School in support of the soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. You don't have to be a resident to attend, just an American.
You can also call the Superintendent of Schools Mr. James Parla at 520-2100 and let him know you oppose what this board has done. Other places you can contact would be www.levittowntribune.com, letters@newsday.com , www.foxnews.com, as well as any local politicians. Let's show other communities that Island Trees cares about its real heroes and about its history.

(Editor's Note: The following letter is in response to an article written in the Dec. 3 issue of the Levittown Tribune. The headline was Residents Urge County to Install Turning Lanes.)
In regards to the Dec. 3 article about installing turning lanes at intersection of Miller Place and Wantagh Avenue, I would like to express my opinion. I have lived on Miller Place for over 30 years, grew up in Island Trees, and now have three children going to school in Island Trees. Miller Place is a death trap waiting to happen, each of my children were not allowed to play out front without an adult until at least the age of eight due to the constant flow and speeding of traffic. The traffic is 90 percent of people cutting through, not those who live here. It took me three years to get stop signs on the corner of Miller Place and South Lane. Not only is the intersection unsafe, but the lives of the children are also at stake. I don't know where Arnold Johnson lives, but I only live approximately 500 feet from Wantagh Avenue and think that the best solution to the problem is to make Miller Place a one way street.
