Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murry and Councilman Gary Hudes paid tribute recently to the Levittown Lightning Girls U-10 Soccer Club for winning the 2004 New York State Nassau County Division 1 Championship. "We are extremely proud of these young athletes," declared Murray. "Participating in youth sports programs like Levittown's soccer club provides our youth with positive experiences that will stay with them all their lives."
The 12-girl team has played together for two years, clinching the Nassau County championship both seasons. Coach Michael McGinty said, "Coaching these young athletes is a real pleasure. They played 18 regular season games, winning 15, tying two and losing only one. They are a team in every sense of the word and that's why they are winners."
Signs congratulating the girls on their victory can be seen at their Levittown home field, Pelini Field, and at the corner of Hempstead Turnpike and Division Avenue. "These athletes represent Levittown's finest," said Hudes. "One hundred forty starting teams competed for the state championship. These girls have a lot to be proud of."
