The Island Trees Wrestling team opened its season with a second-place finish at the Uniondale Invitational. The team placed 11 wrestlers in the tournament, including five in the finals. The Bulldogs were led by champion Dan Eberlein at 130 lbs. Silver medalists included Kris Kellam, Joe Cusker, Bryan Henriques and Mike Cama. Cama lost a close, 3-1 decision, to #1 ranked English of Uniondale. Other place winners from the Bulldogs were freshman Tom Willoughby (fourth) and junior Joe Ambrosio (fourth). The tournament was won by #3 ranked Uniondale. The Bulldogs held the lead most of the day, but were overtaken in the final round.
The Bulldog Wrestling team lost a tough match to #4, ranked in New York State, MacArthur by a score of 41-13. The packed gym saw Island Trees put up a tremendous effort. Joe Cusker, Juan Marin, Kris Kellam and Mike Cama all wrestled to tough victories.
The seventh grade Boys Basketball team had an exciting 45-40 win against an undefeated Hicksville team. With the win, the Bulldogs have now won two in a row and evened up their record to 2 and 2. The team was down by 10 points going into the fourth period, but battled back to cut the deficit to three points. The team traded baskets with Hicksville throughout the fifth period before finally pulling ahead with two minutes to go. Anthony Wrightington sealed the game with a lay-up with 10 seconds left.
Playing outstanding defense, and leading the team in scoring and assists, was Bryan Verbitsky. Bryan dropped in 12 points and had 10 assists. His tenacious defense led to several key steals and easy baskets on the other end for the Bulldogs. Rob Castillo had his best game of the season, grabbing over 12 rebounds and scoring 11 points. Anthony Ciaramitaro had another great game as he had 13 rebounds and seven points. Anthony also played great defense underneath the basket, shutting down Hicksville's strong front line. Anthony Wrightington had 11 points and played well in the final period, adding six of his 11 points in the fifth. Also scoring for the Bulldogs was Pat Lehosky with three points and Sean Ahluwalia and Tyler Bauer each added a basket. The boys never gave up throughout the game and showed tremendous heart as they battled for every loose ball and rebound.
The eighth grade Boys Basketball team lost a tough game to Mattlin. The team played hard throughout the game, but in the end fell short by three points. John Thearle led the way with 13 points, Ryan Tolan and Matt Passatempo each chipped in with five points. Dan Schulz and Nick Bruzzese each had four points. Anthony Mele had three and Dylan Caragher, Tom Hart and Andy Kohl each had two points. Nick Bruzzese, Stephan Barca, Anthony Pascalli and Eric Fazio all played a great defensive game.
Congratulations to the seventh grade Volleyball team on their 3-2 win over Woodland. The match was tied going into game 5, but the Lady Dogs pulled through with a 20-18 final score to clinch the victory. Jackie Kupfer, Michelle Giordano, Elyssa Gullo, Dana Colleluori and Marisela Franco all displayed phenomenal serving skills, while Leanne Saracino, Jessica Pierre-Tijero, Kaitlynn VanAlst and Jaclyn Carabott made notable defensive plays.
The eighth grade Volleyball team suffered a tough loss in a great match against Plainedge. The match was highlighted by a close game 3, which went back and forth and had everyone on the edge of their seats.
