Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray honored members from the Nassau County Police Departments during its 7th Annual Police Service Awards ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Police personnel were honored for their community service, bravery and heroism in solving crimes and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
"From solving murders and making daring rescues to amazing arrests, our police honorees have distinguished themselves as local heroes," said Murray. "The town is proud to have the opportunity to recognize those who serve and protect our residents."
Among those honored was Stephen Perota of the 8th Precinct. Perota was named top cop of the month in the 8th Precinct for his actions at a local sports bar in January. While on routine patrol, Perota came upon what appeared to be a disturbance at Classics Sports Bar in Levittown. Several people ran up to him and informed him about a fight had just taken place in the parking lot and that one person was badly injured and in need of medical attention.
Officer Perota requested an ambulance and attempted to obtain details concerning the altercation. He located the injured person who had severe lacerations on his head. He secured eight witnesses to the assault who informed him that three men had assaulted the victim, repeatedly beating and kicking him. None of the witnesses could furnish a license plate number for the vehicle used by the fleeing suspects.
Officer Perota was decisive and swift in his actions at the crime scene. The evidence that he gathered, including details about the suspects clothing, were critical in making arrests in this case. His investigative prowess helped to overcome confusing accounts and a lack of cooperation from some persons at the crime scene.
"Police officers and detectives in our town and villages make significant sacrifices every day to ensure the safety of all residents," said Murray. "This is the town's way of saying "thank you" to those dedicated and courageous individuals."
